The works to remodel the Plaza Virgen de la Pena are now under way with 2 days of preparation work completed. Monday 16th November saw the start of 5 million euros project to improve the historical areas of Mijas Pueblo.
The remodeling of the historic centre of Mijas Pueblo will include the Plaza Virgen de la Pena, Plaza de la Paz and Plaza de la Constitucion and extends to cover avenida Mejico, calle Malaga, Coin Campos and Canada Gertrudis.
The works are expected to last well into the summer of next year but the town hall have arranged strict time scales over four phases to cause the least disruption for local business and tourists. These works are aimed at improving the experience for tourists and in the long term I have no doubt this will be the case but in the short term local business owners do have some concerns.
The first phase that started in Plaza on Monday is scheduled to last 3 months. These works will focus on the pedestrianisation of the outer ring road and the north side of Avda. Virgen de la Pena.
The second phase will commence on the completion of phase 1 and is scheduled to last a further 3 months. This will complete the works of the Plaza with the remodelling of inner area and the south side of Avda. Virgen de la Pena.
The works for phase 3 will start on January 8th in Calle Malaga and then the Plaza de la Paz in March. To my knowledge no completion date for this phase has been published but one can assume it is scheduled to end before the start of phase 4.
These works will cover the last stretch of Avda. de Mejico through to Canada Gertrudis. Scheduled to start at the end of June and completion at some point over the summer.
It's no doubt at all that the improvements are well overdue and when completed will benefit residents and tourists alike. The timmiings of the works have been scheduled to take place with the minimum of dsruption to those all important visitors to the pueblo with the town hall having visited many foriegn tourist offices to make them aware of the situation. It is important for the local business's that the town hall continue to ensure that visitors feel the least disruption and continue to visit our fantastic pueblo.
